5 Prayers for Back to School
5 Prayers for Back to School.
Anxious about school starting?
Here are 5 prayers for your teens, prayers for kids, and prayers for you to read with your little ones.
Starting back at school can be daunting for anyone.
Are your kids anxious about the return or the new start of school?
The uncertainty, the pressure, the relational dynamics, the time away from home, the endless tests, all these things and more can leave kids feeling alone, and anxious about starting school. Having a good foundation of prayer and including God in the lives of our children, can start when they're little. And can see them through the years ahead.
These 5 prayers will strengthen your kids with the truth they need to survive and enjoy school.
Shorten, and pulling out key phrases for your littler ones, if necessary. Or recite and have them repeat.
1. Love God
Jesus said, "Love the lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind... "Matthew 22:37 Do we love God in our hallway conversations and classroom choices? Do we love Jesus more than our friends, families and favorite subjects? Loving God will overflow into our whole lives. The more we read His word, the more we see His wonderful goodness. The more we know Him, the more we love Him. And His love gives us life.
"Lord, you are my number One, the Hero of my story, the Teacher of my life. Help me put you first and include you more every day. Father you made this world, and created me to be in it to enjoy you, and enjoy life with you. I live, love and learn because you loved me first, gave me life and help me grow. You are always with me so please help me today, to serve you and see you wherever I go, whatever I do. Lord help me know you more and know your love."
2. Love myself
"Love others as yourself." Jesus said in Matthew 22:39. If we are to love our neighbors as ourselves, we need to first love ourselves. This can be tricky no matter how old we are. It can be tricky when looking at our mistakes and knowing how to celebrate ourselves when we succeed. It can be hard when we look in the mirror deciding what to wear today, wondering if others will approve. God loves you, calls you beautiful, cheers you on and wants you to see yourself as He sees you. LOVED AND LOVELY.
"Lord, thank you that you loved me first so I can love myself too. Help me to make good choices and take care of myself, just as you care for me. Help me to receive praise humbly and ask for help when I need it. When I make mistakes, help me to remember I am still growing. If others don't understand me or treat me well, I know you say I am lovable and lovely, and known by you in every way. Thank you that I can love myself, as you love me. Help me grow in your love, so that I can live in the freedom you have for me."
3. Love others
Love your neighbors - peers, friends, teachers, the boys and girls who are lonely or picked on, the kids who can be mean and unkind. Jesus calls us to love everyone, like he does. Love your enemies and do good to those who hurt/mock/curse you. It's much easier to say than do, but Jesus knows how to love others and can teach us how.
"Lord, thank you for loving the world and everyone in it. Help me to love those around me at home and school. Help me to make kind and loving choices to bless and serve my peers, my teachers, friends and enemies. Help me to be a friend to the lonely and a defender of the weak. Help me Lord to know how to bring peace and when to walk away. Help me to bring joy to those around me, and see the beauty you created in all people."
4. Love listening
The Message version puts it beautifully, "Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track." Proverbs 3:6. Jesus called himself our Good Shepherd, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." John 10:27-28. It can be easy to listen to negative voices around us leading us into trouble, following those who aren't encouraging. But Jesus says there's a better way. Listening to Him like a child listens to a wonderful surprise. A surprise of love.
"Lord, thank you that you love to speak and have encouraging words to say to me. Help me to hear your voice for myself, and others around me, as we work and play. Help me be an encourager, just as you encourage me. Help me to be quick to listen and slow to speak. And when I speak, help my words be kind like yours, bringing life not hate, truth not lies. Make me into a home for your Spirit to live in, speak and move through me."
5. Love perseverance
Romans 5:3-5 says when we go through hard times, our "endurance -[perseverance] -develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation." Our character is shaped through perseverance. Jesus said in Luke 21:19, "By your endurance you will gain your souls." Above all things your heart, your soul, is more important than your achievements, or failures. In a world that says our identity is in what we do, God says he's more interested in our character and our hope in Him.
"Lord help me persevere, help me to keep going when it gets tough, when it feels like I'm running alone. Create in me a pure heart O Lord that no matter my grades and results, I can reflect you. Help me to persevere when I struggle and keep my eyes on you when I need hope. Thank you Lord that you have a good future for me. May my heart be stronger than my intelligence, so that I can face the world with humility, grace and kindness. Help me not forget that whether I win or lose, succeed or fail, I am accepted and loved by you always. To the very end."
Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13:7
Love conquers all. Be a conqueror this new year of school.
Be LOVED, be LOVING and believe in LOVE as your answer.
You and your family will be better for knowing Jesus' love through it all.
May these prayers encourage and strengthen your family this September.
